Transform Legacy Systems

Transform Legacy Systems

Over the years, legacy systems are have been questioned on their rigid infrastructure requirements, complex licensing rules, immobility, inadequate support systems and above all, the mammoth costs required to maintain them. You are not alone, fighting the battle to push the system to the cloud.

Migration is a strategic step with a high-risk value for any business. It is essential to understand that the process of migration can take up a lot of time (years in most cases). A robust strategy is an absolute necessity to ensure an optimum utilization of time & resources. It backs you up in making a planned move, supported by success parameters that keep in control of the process and raise a flag when things are not going as expected.

Impact Story

ABOUT OUR CLIENT

Our client provided Fintech solutions to large corporations in the US. They innovated and thrived by making industry relevant products for more than 25 years. These products were functional but lacked offerings that the new age technology standards stood to offer, with UX becoming a significant differentiator, a change could not be delayed. Smaller competitors could not meet the wide ranged need for an end to end solution but were headed in the direction. This would have posed as a direct challenge to our client. They had the upper hand in the market, and they were willing to take the technology to the next level and give their customers the edge they had been asking for.

OBJECTIVE

We were to work together and migrate their existing suite of products onto a web-based platform that would allow them to license their products as SaaS-based offerings to their current and new customers.

UX STRATEGY

Each legacy migration comes with its own unique set of challenges. We wanted to make sure that the strategy we build is quantitative till ‘Cut-off & live.'

Our UX Experts worked with the engineers at our client’s end to define infrastructure specifics:.

The server and data that the new independent shell would use.

Workflows in the current system and grading them by their frequency of usage

Define business goals leading to migration

Identify usability related problems with the current system

This was done by engaging a combination of UX methods such as Stakeholder and User Interviews, Heuristic Evaluation of the current system, Process Mapping of Key Work Flows and Outlining Potential Problem Areas.

With a good base ready, the UX team defined the shell for the new environment to be built into:

With global components defined, it was now time to start moving individual modules to the new shell. UX Experts identified a set of features that could work independently, that could migrate to the new infrastructure.

The UX team used their understanding from the initial discovery exercises and drafted a set of interactive wireframes that reimagined the selected workflows and turned them into interactive wireframes. These variations were tested among real users to determine their efficiency. The UX team collected feedback from these tests and enhanced the wireframes for a better experience.

Meanwhile, the UI team examined the components and interactions that were used in these wireframes and built a design system that allowed the developers to reuse components. This reduced development load and ensured UI consistency across the new platforms.

Feature by feature the UX team drafted wireframes and validated before the UI teams could build the interactions into the new environment.

Once a set of modules were built into the new environment, they were released to selected clients to test the system in a real-world scenario. A few adjustments were made to the system based on the feedback received from the real clients.

In about 8 months, the complete system was migrated and rolled out to new and existing customers. The old system was finally put to rest.
